Happy Friday my Queens! Today’s girl talk is all about V A G I N A. I always find it shocking how little most women know about their vaginas. As a woman who has dealt with many issues regarding my vagina over the years , I've learned a lot about the anatomy of it and how it should be treated. Believe it or not I equate my vaginal health with my mental health, sounds crazy for some but if my vagina isn't happy then neither I am. Over the years I have made sure that I paid close attention to my vagina, making sure I am doing everything to keep it healthy and most of all fresh. In this post I am going to give you some tips on keeping your vagina healthy and fresh, yall ready? Let’s do this.
First, I want to point out the difference between the vagina and the vulva. Your vagina is the internal and the vulva is external. The vagina is the “self-cleaning” organ and the vulva is just like any other part of your body and needs to be cleaned as such.. Note that just because the vagina is a self-cleaning organ, it does need some attention to ensure it isn’t compromised.
Use condoms. If you have multiple sex partners or you are having casual sex with someone it is important to use protection. STI’s are always a risk but so is bacteria infections that can arise from a having sexual relations with a man who doesn’t clean their penis properly.
STOP douching. The common myth that is passed on from the older women in our families is that douching is good but NO! Douching throws your PH balance way off balance and it could take away from the good bacteria your vagina needs. If you feel like you need an extra cleanse I personally recommend taking a tub bath and adding a tablespoon of vinegar to the water to help clean you out.
Wiping from front to back. We all have been raised with this concept, but it is extremely important to make sure you are properly wiping after you pee. Front to back ensures that you are not transferring bacteria from your butt area to your vagina.
No scented soaps. Trish (my vagina) cannot tolerate anything scented down there but even if your vagina can it is best not too. Scented products throw off the natural balance of your vagina and compromise your natural scent.
Get waxed and shaved regularly. Extra hair holds odor. Once I started to get waxed I noticed that it was easier to keep my vagina fresh and clean.
Use organic tampons or menstrual cups/discs. Personally, every time I use tampons I notice a slight change in my vaginas scent which is probably due to the toxins in the tampon. To help with this I have used organic tampons (doesn’t absorb as well) and my personal favorite menstrual disc (if you want to read more about this click here).
Wear cotton underwear or none at all
Once a week allow your vagina to air out by letting your vagina air dry and wearing no underwear to bed
